# From first model to first print

Read them in order the first time: each guide picks up where the one before it ends. After that, jump straight to the step you’re on.

[Start with the first guide ](https://encrust.app/guides/install-encrust/)

## Getting started

1. [ Install EncrustDownload the file for your system from the latest release and install it like any application. The builds aren't code-signed, so macOS needs one Terminal command before the first launch and Windows needs a click on Run anyway. The Linux packages need no extra step. 4 min read](https://encrust.app/guides/install-encrust/)
2. [ Your first printAdd your printer and a resin in Settings, choose them in the Print block, load a calibration piece, check the Issues card in Preview, then slice and copy the file over. Make the first print a calibration piece whatever your printer: of Encrust's 100 printer profiles, only the Elegoo Saturn 4 Ultra has printed one of its files so far. 5 min read](https://encrust.app/guides/first-resin-print/)

## Preparing a model

1. [ Hollowing and drain holesOpen the Hollow tool, choose Through if the model stands on the plate, keep the 2 mm default wall and press Hollow. Then open Drain holes and press Check drainage. Encrust marks every cavity the resin can't leave, and one more press drills a hole into each. 5 min read](https://encrust.app/guides/hollow-resin-model-drain-holes/)
2. [ Supports: automatic, then by handPress Generate supports in the inspector and Encrust cuts the plate into layers and puts a support under every island and overhang. Then add supports by hand, paint patches, or pick and move single ones. Medium is the default profile; Light and Heavy are one click away. 6 min read](https://encrust.app/guides/supports-resin-print/)
3. [ Read the layer check before you printThe layer check reads every layer as Encrust would write it and lists where the print is likely to fail. An island cures over nothing and fails the print. A lever is a thin neck pulled off-centre. A peel is a layer the film pulls hard on. Each comes with its numbers. 4 min read](https://encrust.app/guides/read-the-layer-check/)

Encrust prepares files for machines that cure resin with UV light. It can’t know whether your settings suit your resin, printer or model, so check what it produces before a long print. Provided without warranty, as the licence says.
