# Install Encrust

Updated October 3, 2026 4 min read

Download the file for your system from the latest release and install it like any application. The builds aren't code-signed, so macOS needs one Terminal command before the first launch and Windows needs a click on Run anyway. The Linux packages need no extra step.

## Before you start

Encrust runs on macOS 12 or later (Apple silicon or Intel), on 64-bit Windows 10 or 11, and on x86-64 Linux. It needs a graphics card with Vulkan, Metal or DirectX 12.

Every file is on the [latest release](https://github.com/vvvlladimir/Encrust/releases/latest) page on GitHub, and the [download page](https://encrust.app/download/) links the same files by system.

| System               | File                                                 |
| -------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------- |
| macOS, Apple silicon | Encrust-macos-aarch64.dmg                            |
| macOS, Intel         | Encrust-macos-x86\_64.dmg                            |
| Windows              | Encrust-windows-x86\_64-setup.exe                    |
| Linux                | Encrust-linux-x86\_64.AppImage or encrust\_amd64.deb |

The `encrust-*.tar.gz` and `.zip` archives beside them are portable copies, and what the in-app update downloads. You don’t need them to install.

## Install on macOS

The builds aren’t code-signed. Signing takes a paid Apple developer account, and these builds don’t have one, so macOS quarantines the download and you clear that once.

1. Open the `.dmg` for your Mac and drag Encrust into Applications.
2. Open Terminal and run:
```
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Encrust.app
```
3. Open Encrust from Applications.

The command assumes Encrust is in the main Applications folder. If you put it elsewhere, change the path.

## Install on Windows

Windows SmartScreen warns about the installer for the same reason: there’s no certificate behind it.

1. Download `Encrust-windows-x86_64-setup.exe` and run it.
2. If SmartScreen blocks it, click More info, then Run anyway.
3. Finish the installer and start Encrust.

The installer installs for your user only, so the app can later replace its own files without elevation.

## Install on Linux

Linux gets two packages, and neither needs a warning step.

- **AppImage**: `Encrust-linux-x86_64.AppImage`, one file you run directly.
- **Debian or Ubuntu package**: `encrust_amd64.deb`, installed by your package manager. It depends on `libgtk-3-0` (or `libgtk-3-0t64`) and `libxkbcommon0`.

We build on Ubuntu 22.04, and a Linux binary can’t run against a glibc older than the one it was built with. If your distribution is older, build from source: the steps are under “Build from source” on the download page.

## Keep it up to date

Update checks are off until you turn them on. Open Settings, go to Updates, and switch on “Look for a new release once a day”, or press “Check now”. When a release is newer than yours, the page shows its notes and an “Install and restart” button. The window downloads the archive and checks its signature before it replaces anything.

That button works for the macOS app, the Windows install and the portable archives. An AppImage runs from a read-only mount and a `.deb` belongs to your package manager, so for those the page points you to the release page and you download the new file.

## If something goes wrong

**macOS refuses to open Encrust.** Run the `xattr` command above, then open the app again. If Terminal says there’s no such file, Encrust isn’t in `/Applications`.

**Windows doesn’t offer Run anyway.** The button appears only after you click More info on the SmartScreen window.

**The window doesn’t open.** Check that your graphics card and driver support Vulkan, Metal or DirectX 12\. If they do, [open an issue](https://github.com/vvvlladimir/Encrust/issues/new/choose) with your system and graphics card.

Encrust prepares files for machines that cure resin with UV light. It can’t know whether your settings suit your resin, printer or model, so check what it produces before a long print. Provided without warranty, as the licence says.
